· object of the Memorial
The main object of the Memorial of the 30th of last month was to reply to Lord Grey's Despatch of July 1848, to endeavour to show that the falling off in the Revenue of this settlement and other circumstances, did establish good grounds "for lessening the burden now borne by the community, and that the maintaining of these burdens could not possibly be for the "advantage" of the Settlement. The Memorialists think that it is reasonable they should pay for any advantage from residing in the Settlement, but not beyond this; and that if others engaged
